India marked a significant achievement in its agricultural exports with the first-ever successful shipment of pomegranates to Australia via sea, a move confirmed by officials on Monday. This breakthrough enhances market access for Indian fresh produce while reducing logistics costs compared to traditional air freight. Previously, pomegranates were exported by air due to smaller volumes and differences in ripening times. However, with India securing a market access agreement, a comprehensive work plan and standard operating procedures (SOPs) were finalized in February 2024.
The journey to expand India’s footprint in the Australian market began with a test air shipment in July 2024 to gauge consumer demand. Following its success, stakeholders pushed for more cost-efficient sea transport. On December 6, 2024, the first sea-freight consignment departed India, reaching Sydney on January 13, 2025, carrying 5.7 metric tonnes of premium pomegranates from Solapur, Maharashtra. A separate shipment of 6.56 metric tonnes of the Bhagwa variety arrived in Brisbane on January 6, 2025.
These shipments were facilitated through the collaboration of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), AgroStar’s INI Farms, and Kay Bee Exports. Ensuring transparency and adherence to global standards, both consignments were incorporated into ANARNET, India’s traceability system. Upon arrival, the pomegranates were met with enthusiastic responses in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, prompting requests for additional shipments. The timing of these exports coincided strategically with Australia’s off-season, further increasing demand for Indian produce.
APEDA chairman Abhishek Dev emphasized India’s expanding role in global agricultural exports, noting that fresh fruit exports had surged 29% year-over-year. Pomegranates alone saw a 20% growth, underlining their potential in international markets. He highlighted that APEDA’s advanced traceability systems, such as ANARNET, ensure that Indian agricultural products meet the highest global benchmarks, fostering greater consumer confidence worldwide.
The success of this trial shipment paves the way for increased export volumes and expanded partnerships. With the next export season set to begin in September, industry leaders like AgroStar’s INI Farms and Kay Bee Exports are eager to capitalize on this milestone, ensuring a steady supply of Indian pomegranates to Australia.
