India experienced a significant rise in coffee exports, which increased by 12.22% to reach $1.28 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24. This growth was driven by a higher demand for Robusta coffee in international markets, as reported by the commerce ministry. In comparison, coffee exports were valued at $1.14 billion in the previous fiscal year, 2022-23. As Asia’s third-largest coffee producer and exporter, India cultivates both Arabica and Robusta coffee varieties. Arabica beans are characterized by lower caffeine content and a sweeter, smoother taste, while Robusta beans tend to be more bitter and harsher in flavor.
In terms of volume, India’s coffee exports increased by 13.35% to 125,631 tonnes during the January-March period of 2023-24. During the same period in the previous year, the export volume was 110,830 tonnes. Key markets for India’s coffee exports are Russia, Italy, the UAE, Germany, and Turkey.
