India’s upcoming BRICS chairship will be guided by a humanity-first and people-centric vision, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said, emphasising the need to harness the collective strength of member nations to address global challenges and promote shared welfare.
Speaking at the unveiling of the BRICS India 2026 website, logo and theme, Jaishankar noted that the grouping has steadily evolved over the past two decades into a significant platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing economies. He said BRICS has continuously adapted to changing global realities while maintaining a strong focus on dialogue, inclusivity and practical outcomes.
Highlighting the importance of the moment, the minister said India will assume the BRICS chairship at a time marked by geopolitical uncertainty, economic complexity, climate-related risks, rapid technological change and persistent development gaps across regions. In this context, he said, BRICS remains a vital forum that encourages cooperation while respecting national priorities at different stages of development.
India’s chairship theme — Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability — reflects its belief that collaborative action among BRICS members can help address shared challenges in a balanced and inclusive manner. The theme underlines the importance of strengthening institutional capacities, fostering innovation and advancing sustainable development for the benefit of all.
Jaishankar also spoke about the symbolism of the BRICS chairship logo, which blends tradition with modernity. The design incorporates the colours of all BRICS member countries, representing unity, diversity and shared purpose, while reinforcing the idea that the grouping draws strength from the collective contributions of its members.
Outlining India’s priorities, the minister said the chairship will focus on four key areas — resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability — spanning the core pillars of political and security cooperation, economic and financial engagement, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Under the resilience pillar, India aims to strengthen cooperation in areas such as agriculture, health, disaster risk reduction, energy and supply chains. Innovation, he said, remains central to global economic development, particularly through enhanced collaboration in start-ups, MSMEs and emerging technologies that can help build a more equitable world.
India will also attach equal importance to cooperation and sustainability, advancing climate action, promoting clean energy transitions and supporting development pathways that balance growth with environmental responsibility during its BRICS chairship.
