The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has revealed the ceremonial attire and sports gear that will be worn by the Indian delegation participating in the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. This momentous occasion was graced by the presence of Anurag Singh Thakur, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs and Sports, along with PT Usha, the president of the IOA.
Scheduled to take place from September 23 to October 8, 2023, the 19th Asian Games will witness India’s largest-ever contingent, comprising 634 athletes spanning 38 diverse sporting disciplines. The ceremonial outfits for athletes include a khaki textured saree for women and a khaki kurta for men, thoughtfully crafted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). These garments are not only fashioned from recycled materials but also feature intricate Indian motifs, underlining a commitment to sustainability and the celebration of India’s cultural heritage.
The Sports Minister underscored the significance of this uniform, emphasizing that it transcends mere attire. Instead, it serves as a symbol of pride and identity for Indian athletes, representing the nation’s self-reliance and showcasing its rich heritage and design prowess. The minister expressed confidence in the team’s ability to represent a dynamic and modern India, aiming for historic performances and an impressive medal count. A call was made for the nation to rally behind and support these athletes.
The playing kit, designed by Aaquib Wani, a designer from Kashmir, draws inspiration from various Indian art forms, celebrating the nation’s diversity and unity. This design ensures that every athlete carries a piece of their home state with them onto the field.
India’s contingent for the 2022 Asian Games boasts a significant presence in rowing, with 33 members, making it the second-largest unit after athletics. Furthermore, a 15-member Esports team is set to make its official debut at the Asian Games. In the previous edition of the Asian Games in 2018, India’s contingent achieved a remarkable feat by securing a total of 70 medals, including 16 gold medals.
PT Usha, the president of the IOA, expressed great anticipation for the 2022 Asian Games and the substantial Indian representation of 634 athletes. It is believed that this talented squad has the potential to bring home India’s best-ever medal haul. The IOA has prioritized the well-being and support of athletes, ensuring they are at the heart of their efforts.
