In a significant political shake-up, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled a 38-member Cabinet, comprising 28 ministers and 10 Secretaries of State. These Secretaries will support the ministers with focused oversight of key areas, ensuring sharper leadership across portfolios.
This new team enters office with a mandate to tackle pressing national and international challenges. Prime Minister Carney highlighted three immediate priorities: redefining Canada’s economic and security partnership with the United States, addressing the rising cost of living, and revitalizing Canada’s position as a G7 economic leader. In a post on X, Carney emphasized that the new Cabinet is “empowered and expected to lead,” with a strong commitment to these objectives.
Among the standout appointments is Anita Anand, who takes on the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs. A prominent figure of Indian descent, Anand has held multiple senior roles since entering politics in 2019. She previously oversaw the Public Services and Procurement portfolio during the COVID-19 crisis, managed vaccine distribution, served as Defense Minister during key military operations including Canada’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and later held the Treasury Board and Transport portfolios. Anand, born in Nova Scotia to Indian immigrant parents, is a legal scholar with degrees from Dalhousie, the University of Toronto, and Oxford, and has also taught at Yale.
Other key appointments include Shafqat Ali as President of the Treasury Board, Rebecca Alty as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Gary Anandasangaree as Minister of Public Safety, and Chrystia Freeland as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade. Evan Solomon will lead the newly created Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation.
The new leadership comes at a critical juncture as traditional policy models face disruption from AI, geopolitical shifts, and economic strain. With strong backing from Secretaries of State and a team of seasoned ministers, the Cabinet is positioned to drive bold policy shifts and lay down a transformative vision for Canada’s future.
