Mango exports from India have surged by 19% in the first five months of the current fiscal year, as reported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and
the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
In this period, mango exports reached a total value of $47.98 million, a significant increase from $40.33 million during the same period the previous year. APEDA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, facilitated mango exports totaling 27,330.02 million tonnes (MT) during April-August 2023.
India’s mango exports to the USA, one of its key markets, increased by 19% in just the first five months, totaling 2,043.60 MT. In addition to the USA, India also exported mangoes to Japan (43.08 MT), New Zealand (110.99 MT), Australia (58.42 MT), and South Africa (4.44 MT).
Furthermore, India expanded its mango export footprint by exploring new markets in countries such as Nigeria, the Czech Republic, Mauritius, and Iran.
To facilitate increased mango exports for the 2023 season, India invited inspectors from the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for pre-clearance of mangoes at irradiation facilities in Vashi, Nashik, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad.
South Korean inspectors were also granted mango pre-clearance, allowing India to export 18.43 MT of mangoes after treatment at authorized vapour heat treatment facilities. India’s efforts to boost exports included showcasing Indian mangoes at the Seoul Food & Hotel Show. Bahrain received 75 eastern mango varieties from APEDA, including five with Geographical Indication (GI tags), in celebration of India’s 75th anniversary of independence (Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav).
To promote Indian mangoes globally, APEDA organized various events, including a mango tasting event in Brussels featuring Amrapalli, Banganapalli, Kesar, and Himsagar mango varieties. Similar promotional activities were conducted in collaboration with Indian embassies in Kuwait and Afghanistan.
