The Indian Navy and the Italian Navy recently conducted a landmark bilateral maritime exercise off the West Coast of India, which took place from October 1 to October 6. This engagement marked the first-ever joint exercise involving Carrier Strike Groups (CSG) from both nations. A CSG is a versatile naval formation capable of operating in various conditions, whether in confined waters or the open ocean, and is essential for modern naval operations.
During the harbor phase of the exercise, both navies engaged in subject matter expert exchanges and key professional interactions, including a Pre-Sail Planning Conference that involved participation from the Indian Air Force.
The sea phase occurred on October 5 and 6, featuring the Indian carrier INS Vikramaditya and the Italian carrier ITS Cavour, along with guided missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam and frigate ITS Alpino. The two CSGs conducted rigorous operations involving their integral fighter aircraft and helicopters, executing combined large force engagements, air combat missions, helicopter operations, and search and rescue drills.
Notably, the exercise included coordinated weapon firings and joint maneuvers, demonstrating the command and control capabilities of both navies and enhancing their interoperability. A key aspect of the exercise was the involvement of the Indian Air Force, which conducted maneuvers with aircraft from the Italian CSG, focusing on large force engagements and combat missions.
This initiative, titled ‘Bridges of Friendship,’ reflects the strong and cooperative relationship between India and Italy, spanning various domains, including defense and cultural exchanges.
