On Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla praised the Indian diaspora in the UK for their invaluable contributions, attributing the increasing global trust in India to their dedication, work ethic, and excellence in various fields. He emphasized that Indians’ commitment to service and hard work has significantly shaped India’s international reputation, independent of political influence.
While addressing the Indian community at India House, Birla wished them a prosperous new year and remarked on India’s cultural diversity, with festivals like Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Lohri being celebrated globally. Despite being far from home, Birla acknowledged that the heart and culture of Indians around the world remain deeply connected to India.
Birla also shared his interactions with global leaders, noting that many nations view the 21st century as India’s time to shine. In his conversations with UK leaders, Birla mentioned their strong belief in India’s future, with a growing role in addressing global issues. He expressed gratitude that this trust is a direct result of the hard work and achievements of Indians living abroad.
The Speaker attended a reception at India House in London, where he met with India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami. Birla also discussed India’s role as the largest and most vibrant democracy with UK House of Commons Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle. He highlighted India’s impressive electoral processes and its ongoing commitment to gender equality.
Birla’s diplomatic visit also included a meeting with UK Minister for Intergovernmental Relations, Pat McFadden, where they discussed enhancing economic, technological, and cultural ties between the two nations. Birla expressed his optimism about the future of India-UK relations, especially in areas like defense, healthcare, education, and climate change.
During his five-day official trip, Birla will also visit Scotland and Guernsey. In Scotland, he plans to meet with key political leaders and chair an important meeting of the Commonwealth’s Conference of Speakers, which will take place in India in 2026.
