The Indian American community in New England gathered to bid farewell to Dr. Varun Jeph, India’s Deputy Consul General in New York, in a heartfelt ceremony. Hosted at the residence of Mohan and Shyama Nannapaneni in Southborough, Massachusetts, the event was organized by the Foundation of Indian Americans – New England (FIA-NE) and Team Aid. Nearly 25 community organizations came together to express appreciation for Dr. Jeph’s unwavering service over the past four years, including his efforts during the challenging Covid pandemic.
Dr. Jeph’s tenure at the New York Consulate saw several remarkable achievements. His leadership played a crucial role in repatriating Indian nationals during the pandemic and in organizing consular camps across states under his jurisdiction. He was instrumental in initiating the International India Day Parade at Boston Harbor, a symbolic event linking India’s independence movement to the American Revolution. His efforts also contributed to the announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the establishment of a new Indian consulate in Boston, set to enhance services for the New England region.
The farewell event drew several distinguished guests, including New Hampshire State Representative Santosh Salvi, VHPA President Kaushik Patel, FIA-BOT’s Sandeep Asija, IAGB President Tanu Phenix, and numerous other leaders from cultural and nonprofit organizations. The evening was filled with heartfelt tributes, with many attendees expressing their hope to see Dr. Jeph return as Consul General at the upcoming Boston consulate.
FIA-NE President Abhishek Singh praised Dr. Jeph for his dedication to assisting Indian nationals, particularly students stranded during the pandemic. He also highlighted his role in advocating for a direct Air India flight initiative and his continued support in community-led efforts. Team Aid President Mohan Nannapaneni echoed these sentiments, applauding Dr. Jeph’s commitment to fostering cooperation between Team Aid and the Indian consulate.
Reflecting on his tenure, Dr. Jeph recalled his initial virtual meeting with New England’s Indian community and the memorable India Day Parade at Boston Harbor. Expressing his deep connection to Boston, he confirmed that the new consulate would soon be operational. He extended gratitude to community leaders for their support and acknowledged guidance from senior Indian diplomats.
Dr. Neela Gandhi, a respected community leader, led the evening’s proceedings, ensuring a warm and celebratory sendoff. The farewell not only recognized Dr. Jeph’s contributions but also underscored the strength of community unity.
