A coalition of Indian-Americans has unveiled a new campaign, “Indian Americans for Harris,” aimed at rallying support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. This initiative seeks to advance Harris’s candidacy, potentially making her the first individual of Indian heritage to lead the United States.
The campaign will concentrate on critical battleground states such as North Carolina, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Georgia. Desh Chatterjee, a prominent North Carolina businessman and supporter of the campaign, emphasised that the grassroots effort will mobilise Indian-Americans in these pivotal areas to back Harris.
Chatterjee described the campaign as a historic moment, noting that Harris, with her Indian heritage, represents a significant milestone. “For the first time, we have a candidate whose mother is from India and who embodies Indian culture and values. As Indian-Americans, we should support her beyond party lines,” he told PTI.
The campaign’s website underscores Harris’s biracial background as a reflection of America’s diversity, resonating with many voters given that approximately 12.5% of the U.S. population identifies as biracial.
The group views this moment as a celebration of Indian-American success, highlighting the community’s achievements and the potential for having a representative in the highest office. “Our message is clear,” they stated. “Support Kamala Harris as she is the right choice for navigating the U.S. and the world toward a more equitable future.”
Harris’s candidacy, being the first woman of Indian descent to serve as Vice President, is seen as a landmark achievement for the Indian-American community. Her leadership is viewed as aligned with the community’s aspirations for a just and inclusive America, marking a significant chapter in their history.
