A coalition of Indian American civil society groups recently convened a meeting with Congressman Ro Khanna in anticipation of his upcoming trip to India. The purpose of the meeting is to shed light on crucial regional priorities that will be addressed during his visit.
Husnaa Vohra, who represented the Indian American Muslim Council, expressed her deep apprehension regarding the state of liberal democracy, pluralism, and human rights in India. She emphasized that the coalition, comprising diverse Indian American organizations, aims to protect the essence of pluralism and democracy in India. Vohra called on Congressman Khanna to address the ongoing instances of violence and human rights violations.
Representatives from the India Civil Watch India International emphasized the need for a democratic alliance against totalitarianism, seeking the Congressman’s assistance in this endeavor.
Ria Chakrabarty, a representative from Hindus for Human Rights, encouraged Congressman Ro Khanna to embrace progressive Hindu values and support initiatives to combat caste-based discrimination.
Prachi Patankar, a member of India Civil Watch International, expressed concerns about extremist groups and urged Congressman Khanna to distance himself from hate speech and misinformation.
Collectively, the coalition highlighted a range of perspectives, offering insights into various concerns prevalent within the Indian American community. Congressman Ro Khanna affirmed his resolute dedication to upholding democratic values and human rights, both in India and the United States. He acknowledged the coalition’s concerns and endorsed the vital need to cultivate a pluralistic and democratic India.
The Congressman also expressed his commitment to safeguarding minority rights in India. Additionally, he proudly announced his co-sponsorship of the SAFEGUARD Act, which ensures that human rights considerations are fundamental when exporting arms and defense services to foreign nations.
Lastly, Congressman Khanna agreed to conduct a public discussion with the coalition upon his return from India.
