A coalition of U.S. Representatives, led by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, has strongly condemned recent attacks on places of worship, particularly mandirs or Hindu temples, across the United States. The group, which includes Ro Khanna, Shri Thanedar, Pramila Jayapal, and Ami Bera, has written a letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ), urging clarity on ongoing investigations into these incidents and a comprehensive strategy to combat hate crimes against Hindus.
The Representatives expressed concern over the surge in attacks at mandirs from New York to California, causing heightened anxiety among Hindu Americans. They highlighted that affected communities have reported a lack of progress in identifying suspects, leaving many living in fear and uncertainty. The letter emphasized the need for better coordination among law enforcement agencies and federal oversight to ensure equal protection under the law.
The signatories stressed that even a few coordinated acts of hate can instill fear within marginalized communities. They called for collaborative efforts to combat hate against all religious, ethnic, racial, and cultural minorities in America. The Representatives requested an understanding of the DOJ’s specific strategy regarding hate crimes targeting Hindus, seeking urgent briefing on the matter no later than Apr. 18th.
Khanderao Kand, Chief of Policy and Strategy at the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies, highlighted growing concerns within the Indian diaspora and South Asian communities regarding their safety and religious freedom in the United States. He noted a sudden spike in incidents like graffiti, vandalism, and thefts at temples in Q1 2024. Kand thanked the Indian American House of Representatives for urging the FBI and DOJ to investigate, hoping for thorough inquiries to assure peace-loving Indian diaspora and South Asians about their safety and religious freedom.
