Amidst the ongoing debate over H-1B visas, US Domestic Policy Advisor Neera Tanden emphasized America’s immigrant heritage and the need for legal immigration reforms. Speaking to PTI, she noted the overwhelming contributions of Indian professionals, who dominate the H-1B visa program, particularly in technology, with a Congressional cap of 65,000 visas annually, plus 20,000 for US-educated individuals.
Tanden condemned the hate campaign against Indian-Americans following Sriram Krishnan’s appointment as White House Policy Advisor on Artificial Intelligence by President-elect Donald Trump. She highlighted the importance of countering such vitriol, stating, “It’s crucial to denounce attacks on Indian-Americans and ensure all are treated as equal citizens.”
She also lauded the Indian-American community’s leadership in various fields, including healthcare, education, and technology, while urging bipartisan support to protect their rights. Citing examples of influential figures like Congress members Raja Krishnamoorthi and Ro Khanna, Tanden stressed the importance of collective advocacy to combat racism.
On the broader India-US relationship, Tanden pointed out the dynamic contributions of the Indian diaspora in fostering innovation and strengthening people-to-people ties. She praised India’s entrepreneurial spirit, particularly in biotech and biopharma, as a shared value connecting the two nations.
Reflecting on her journey, Tanden expressed pride in advancing civil rights and addressing challenges such as healthcare costs and education accessibility. She called on Indian-Americans to engage in public service and hold leaders accountable to ensure representation and equality in policymaking.
