Sachin Jain, CEO of SCAN Group, recently shared the remarkable story of his mother’s determination and entrepreneurial spirit after moving to the United States in the 1970s. Balancing life in a new country while her husband completed his anesthesiology residency, she found a small opportunity that would change their family’s future.
She came across an advertisement seeking a babysitter in their apartment building and decided to take up the role. Starting with just one child, her small home gradually became a local daycare as word spread. Children enjoyed her cooking, especially the puffed-up rotis, earning her the affectionate nickname “magic” from the kids she cared for.
Through her hard work and dedication, she eventually earned $200 per week. Over the course of a year, her savings reached $10,000, which became the down payment for the family’s first home in the United States. Jain highlighted his parents’ courage and resourcefulness, expressing admiration for their ability to build a life in a foreign country from scratch.
The story also reflects the broader contributions of the Indian-American community, which numbered around 5.2 million as of 2023, according to US Census and Pew Research data. Indian Americans have established themselves across diverse industries, including healthcare, retail, technical services, and hospitality, while also operating small businesses that generate employment and contribute significantly to the US economy. Indians also represent the largest share of H1-B visa holders, filling critical roles in sectors such as technology and defense.
Jain’s post serves as a reminder of the perseverance, innovation, and impact of immigrants, showing how determination and entrepreneurial effort can create lasting opportunities for families and communities alike. His mother’s journey from a small babysitting role to enabling homeownership stands as an inspiring example of resilience and vision in the face of challenges.
