Dr. T N Subramaniam, a distinguished Indian American mathematician known for his groundbreaking work and innovation, including the creation of Route One company and server for General Motors, passed away in Michigan at the age of 76.
Having immigrated to the US in 1979, Subramaniam left a lasting impact on both Indian and American academic circles with his profound mathematical models and theories. Initially teaching mathematics at Philadelphia University, he later relocated to Oakland, where he continued to contribute significantly to the field for several years.
Subramaniam’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Route One, a company serving the automotive manufacturing sector, specializing in auto-financing for General Motors vehicles and GPS systems. He played a pivotal role in designing the server infrastructure for General Motors’ site in Troy, Michigan, further cementing his legacy in the industry.
Survived by his wife, daughter, and son-in-law, who are actively engaged in the Biden administration in Maryland, Subramaniam also leaves behind a notable family legacy. TN Ashok, his younger sibling, is a well-known global blogger and ex-Economics Editor at Press Trust of India.
Jairam Ramesh, a leader of the Indian National Congress, fondly remembered Subramaniam’s illustrious journey from his days at IIT Mumbai to his pioneering contributions in the US. Reflecting on Subramaniam’s appearance in the documentary “I am 20,” Ramesh highlighted his significant impact on youth culture and academic circles, noting interactions with prominent figures like the-then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.
Ramesh also mentioned Subramaniam’s fellow IIT Mumbai alumnus, Dunu Roy, a noted social activist, underscoring the enduring legacy of individuals who have made significant contributions to society.
