A prominent Indian-American maritime executive has been recognized for his outstanding leadership in the global shipping industry through a prestigious international award jointly presented by a United Nations agency and Bahrain’s leading business chamber. Dr. SV Anchan, Chairman of Safesea Group, received the ACE Global Bridges 2026 Global Maritime Personality for Performance & Leadership Award, conferred by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Washington-based ACE Health Foundation. The award ceremony took place at a special event hosted in Bahrain on February 8.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Anchan expressed deep appreciation for the recognition, stating that he was honored to stand among global leaders committed to strengthening partnerships and fostering meaningful collaboration across industries. He emphasized that such gatherings inspire business leaders to work harder, contribute more, and elevate their respective sectors on the global stage. He further pledged to continue his efforts in transforming opportunities into real, measurable outcomes through consistent dedication and strategic action.
Reflecting on his long-standing professional ties with Bahrain, Dr. Anchan recalled his involvement in the United Nations Oil-for-Food Programme following the Iraq-Kuwait conflict. He noted that he had supervised some of the earliest vessels operating under this initiative in the region, marking a significant chapter in his maritime career. He also highlighted Bahrain’s crucial role as a strategic maritime hub, particularly in facilitating coordination between the US 5th Fleet and commercial shipping operators to ensure vessel safety and security in critical waterways such as the Gulf of Aden.
Dr. Anchan underscored Bahrain’s growing importance as a global maritime partner, attributing this to its strategic location, strong maritime infrastructure, and forward-thinking policies. He pointed out that historically, nations with robust maritime capabilities have achieved sustained economic success, while those that neglected maritime development have faced economic decline.
In a major professional milestone, Dr. Anchan was appointed to the Board of Directors of the American Steamship Owners Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association, commonly known as the American Club. He is the only Indian-American executive serving on its 20-member board, making his appointment particularly noteworthy. The American Club, founded in 1917 in New York, is a key member of the International Group of P&I Clubs, which collectively provides insurance coverage for nearly 90 percent of global shipping.
Safesea Group, in a statement, described his board appointment as a significant achievement that reflects both tradition and progressive leadership. The company highlighted his deep expertise, integrity, and long-standing commitment to maritime safety and governance.
With over 30 years of experience in shipping and logistics, Dr. Anchan has received multiple accolades, including India’s highest shipping honors—the Shipping Pravasi Award and the National Maritime Award for Eminent Overseas Maritime Personality. He was also named among the Top 10 Inspiring Leaders of 2022 by a global research firm. Safesea Group continues to serve major international organizations, including the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces, the World Food Program, and the US government’s General Services Administration.
