Indian American lawmakers have expressed deep concern over the allegations involving two Indian nationals in a foiled assassination plot against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Nikhil Gupta and an Indian government officer identified as “CC-1” face DOJ charges for planning to kill Khalistani supporter Pannun on U.S. soil. Representatives Pramila Jayapal, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ami Bera, Ro Khanna, and Shri Thanedar issued a joint statement, urging a thorough Indian government investigation and accountability for those involved. They emphasized the potential damage to US-India ties if not addressed appropriately.
The lawmakers received a classified briefing on the DOJ’s indictment, highlighting the gravity of the murder-for-hire allegations involving an Indian government official. They welcomed India’s Committee of Enquiry announcement but stressed the need for a comprehensive investigation, accountability, and assurances to prevent future incidents.
While acknowledging the positive impact of bilateral ties, the lawmakers emphasized that the actions outlined in the indictment could jeopardize this consequential partnership. On November 29, the DOJ charged Gupta, and the lawmakers underscored the importance of addressing the matter to preserve the meaningful relationship between both countries.
In parallel, an unidentified family member of Gupta approached the Supreme Court in India, alleging violations of his religious beliefs and denial of rights during detention. The justices declined involvement, citing the sensitivity of the matter for the ministry to handle.
