In response to the recent four-day truce between Israel and Hamas, U.S. Representatives Ami Bera, Shri Thanedar, and Ro Khanna expressed their support for the development. The agreement involves the release of hostages taken by Hamas militants on October 7, along with the release of Palestinian prisoners by Israel.
Representative Bera emphasized the hope that the Biden administration can leverage this pause to advance negotiations for a more secure future for Israelis and a life of dignity for Palestinians. He acknowledged the urgent need for a different path forward, especially after the events of October 7.
Representative Shri Thanedar, using the social media platform X, compared the truce to the humanitarian pause he advocated for, suggesting the use of this time to bring as many hostages to safety without giving Hamas an opportunity to regroup.
Representative Ro Khanna expressed hope for the release of 50 hostages and a multi-day ceasefire. He emphasized the need for the ceasefire to be permanent after the deal, ensuring the release of all hostages, facilitating aid delivery, ending violence, holding perpetrators accountable, and initiating the rebuilding process.
The temporary truce, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S., includes the release of 50 civilian women and children hostages in the Gaza Strip in exchange for Palestinian women and children detained in Israeli prisons. The Qatari foreign ministry stated that the number of releases would increase in later stages of the agreement’s implementation.
