Arvind Venkat, 50, made history as the first Indian-American elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Representing the 30th district, the Democratic lawmaker also continues his career as an emergency physician. Since taking office in December 2022 and being re-elected in November 2024, Venkat has focused on improving healthcare accessibility and affordability for Pennsylvanians.
Discussing his political journey, Venkat shared that earning voter trust in a district with only 6-7% South Asian residents was a significant challenge. To connect with constituents, he knocked on over 34,000 doors since his first campaign in February 2022, building meaningful relationships in the process.
A Yale-educated physician, Venkat was motivated to enter politics after leading Pennsylvania’s emergency physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Witnessing the gaps in healthcare firsthand, he believed leaders with medical expertise were vital in the legislative arena. Venkat continues practicing medicine on weekends, ensuring he remains grounded in community concerns while shaping policies in the state legislature.
Healthcare remains his primary focus, with notable efforts including a bipartisan medical debt relief program supported by Governor Josh Shapiro. Venkat also champions public health initiatives addressing issues like food allergies and the fentanyl crisis. Beyond healthcare, he is a member of the energy and finance committees.
Venkat is proud of his Indian heritage, spearheading legislation to recognize Diwali as a state holiday. Actively engaging with the Indian diaspora in Pennsylvania, he participates in cultural events across Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and other communities. Born in Tamil Nadu, he stays connected with his roots through family visits and local community involvement, including the Sree Venkateshwara Temple in Pittsburgh.
Addressing the surge in racist attacks against Indian professionals in the US, Venkat stressed the importance of political activism. He criticized rhetoric fueling anti-immigrant sentiment and urged Indian-Americans to counter racism through active engagement. His leadership inspires younger generations to enter public life, with several Indian-Americans interning under him and taking on roles in local governance.
