A recent report highlights that Indian American households have a median annual income of approximately $151,200, substantially higher than the US median of about $83,700. This positions them as the highest-earning ethnic group in the country, earning nearly $67,500 more than the average American household—a difference of nearly 80 percent.
Although Indian Americans represent a relatively small segment of the US population, around 4.8 million people or 1.4 percent of the total population, their economic impact is substantial. The report attributes this to their significant presence in professional, technical, and specialised sectors, resulting in strong earnings and a robust financial footprint across the country. Even when compared to other high-income Asian communities, Indian Americans maintain a clear lead.
Taiwanese American households rank second, with a median income of about $133,300, roughly $17,900 less than that of Indian Americans. The combined median for all Asian American households stands at around $105,600, still considerably below the typical Indian American household income.
The high earnings of Indian Americans also translate into a meaningful contribution to federal taxes. Collectively, Indian American households pay nearly six percent of total federal revenue, reflecting their concentration in top-income brackets and their strong professional engagement.
Industry leaders, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, have acknowledged the significant impact of people of Indian origin in the US. Musk noted that Indian engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs have consistently contributed to technological and business growth across multiple sectors. He emphasised that global talent, including skilled Indian professionals, is essential in addressing the talent shortage faced by American companies.
Additionally, government reports indicate ongoing engagement between India and the United States to explore a mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement, highlighting the continued importance of strong economic and professional links between the two countries.
