A new children’s book on Diwali, written by Indian-American author Chhavi Arya Bhargava, seeks to raise awareness of the festival’s cultural traditions while promoting inclusivity and diversity. Titled “A Kids Book About Diwali,” the book is part of a popular series by A Kids Co. and aims to provide a universal connection to the festival, regardless of cultural background.
In an interview with PTI, Bhargava mentioned that her motivation to write the book stemmed from the desire to create something accessible for all children, whether they celebrate Diwali or are simply curious about the holiday. She wanted those who observe Diwali to feel recognized and those unfamiliar with the festival to gain a better understanding of its significance.
The book addresses themes of beliefs, identity, and sharing, portraying Diwali’s universal messages of light overcoming darkness and good triumphing over evil. Bhargava expressed her hope that the book encourages curiosity about different cultures while fostering pride in one’s own traditions. She emphasized that Diwali, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, is a holiday that everyone can embrace.
Bhargava explained that while there are some fiction books about Diwali, there is a lack of non-fiction books that delve into the festival’s deeper meaning. During her research, she spoke with hundreds of South Asian mothers, many of whom could describe the traditions associated with Diwali but were less familiar with the festival’s underlying significance.
She stressed that Diwali should not be treated as an afterthought in schools and urged for it to be included in the curriculum. According to Bhargava, education and awareness are essential for fostering inclusivity, which is the central message of her book.
