Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in the United States on Saturday for a significant three-day visit. His itinerary includes participation in the Quad summit, a bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden, and an address to the Indian diaspora at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, followed by a speech at the Summit of the Future.
A major topic at the Quad summit will be China’s aggressive stance, which US National Security Council (NSC) Coordinator John Kirby indicated will be a priority on the agenda. Indian-origin Congressman Shri Thanedar emphasized the need for the US and India to strengthen their alliance to counter China’s growing assertiveness. “To mitigate China’s aggression, a robust partnership between India and the US is essential,” he stated, highlighting the importance of collaboration in technology, defense, and commerce.
Thanedar praised PM Modi’s rapport with both President Biden and former President Trump, noting that Modi’s leadership is highly regarded in the US. He criticized China’s disregard for intellectual property, human rights, and fair trade practices, calling for a united front between India and the US to counterbalance this.
The Quad summit represents a crucial opportunity for economic collaboration among the four member nations, especially as they navigate the ongoing recovery from the global economic impact of COVID-19. Thanedar remarked on the swift economic recovery in the US under Biden’s leadership and the necessity for all Quad countries to work collectively for mutual benefit.
The Indian diaspora is abuzz with excitement for PM Modi’s visit, with over 24,000 Indian-Americans registered to attend his community event on September 22. The gathering, titled “Modi & US: Progress Together,” aims to celebrate the achievements and diversity of the Indian-American community and will feature cultural performances and notable Indian-American figures.
Thanedar noted that the Indian diaspora holds PM Modi in high regard for his role in enhancing India’s economic status, celebrating what he has achieved during his tenure.
PM Modi’s visit is particularly timely as the US approaches its Presidential election in November, where incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are the leading candidates. Thanedar underscored the importance of economic issues, immigration, and rights in this election, expressing confidence in Harris’s leadership and the support she garners from various demographics, especially among younger voters and women.
