India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau recently engaged in a high-level discussion, focusing on key bilateral issues. The two officials explored ways to minimize trade restrictions, enhance defense and technology cooperation, and address illegal immigration to the United States, according to a statement from the US Department of State, spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed.
During the discussion, Deputy Secretary Landau expressed appreciation for India’s assistance in tackling illegal immigration and requested continued support on this issue. The dialogue also covered broader concerns, including economic security and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The talks come amid the US government’s decision to implement reciprocal tariffs on India, set to take effect from April 2. In addition to economic discussions, Misri congratulated Landau on his recent confirmation by the US Senate and extended an invitation for him to visit India. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the growing strategic alignment between the two nations and emphasized the importance of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
Both sides acknowledged the increasing collaboration in trade, defense, and technology and agreed to maintain open dialogue on migration and mobility-related concerns.
On immigration matters, the US Embassy in India recently announced the cancellation of approximately 2,000 visa appointments that had been booked using automated bots, reinforcing its strict policy against fraudulent scheduling practices. The embassy reiterated its zero-tolerance approach toward unauthorized agents who manipulate the visa application process.
With ongoing efforts to deepen diplomatic and economic ties, India and the US remain committed to addressing mutual challenges while strengthening their strategic partnership.
