Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, the United States has maintained ongoing dialogue with India regarding joint efforts to hold Russia accountable, as stated by U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti on July 4. In an email interview with The Hindu, Garcetti highlighted shared objectives between India and the U.S., including preventing the escalation of the conflict, fostering stability in the Middle East, and supporting the establishment of a future Palestinian state.
Acknowledging India’s humanitarian aid to Ukraine, Garcetti underscored the strategic partnership’s strength in coordinating responses to global challenges. He emphasized ongoing discussions on imposing consequences on Russia for its unwarranted invasion, aligning with efforts preceding the upcoming NATO summit scheduled for July 9-11.
Coinciding with the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia on July 8-9 for the annual bilateral summit was noted. Garcetti expressed U.S. support for Ukraine’s independence and development across military, economic, and democratic dimensions.
In previous interviews, Garcetti emphasized global solidarity against unilateral territorial aggression and urged India’s cooperation in identifying entities supporting Russia’s war efforts. He acknowledged India’s historical ties with both Ukraine and Russia, urging constructive Indian engagement for peace while cautioning against violations of international sanctions by Indian companies.
Describing India as a pivotal strategic ally, Garcetti highlighted ambitious collaborative efforts ranging from defense partnerships to space exploration. Quoting President Joe Biden on the consequential nature of U.S.-India relations, Garcetti emphasized the multiplier effect of their cooperation across various sectors, including joint ventures in aerospace and burgeoning trade ties.
Responding to queries on NATO’s role in India, Garcetti clarified there is no NATO presence in India and no formal request for one, although many NATO members are vital defense partners to India. He reiterated shared interests in maintaining a secure Indo-Pacific region and India’s leadership therein, underscoring NATO’s evolving dynamics and recent expansions.
Overall, Garcetti’s remarks underscored the nuanced U.S.-India relations amid global geopolitical shifts, emphasizing cooperation on shared values and strategic interests while respecting India’s independent policy choices regarding international alliances.
