India is preparing to launch an advanced US communications satellite that will enable direct mobile phone calls through space connectivity, representing a significant leap in satellite telephony technology. Unlike existing services, this innovation eliminates the need for specialized devices.
This marks the first instance of a large-scale US communications satellite being launched exclusively by India. Previously, only smaller satellites from American companies have been sent to space by Indian rockets.
Science Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh revealed that the launch is scheduled for February or March, enabling voice calls via mobile phones. While the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has not disclosed the satellite operator, experts suggest it is Texas-based AST SpaceMobile. The company plans to utilize ISRO’s Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) for this mission.
AST SpaceMobile CEO Abel Avellan had earlier confirmed their intent to deploy the Bluebird satellite, weighing approximately 6,000 kilograms and featuring a 64-square-meter antenna. Positioned in low Earth orbit, this satellite aims to bridge global connectivity gaps by delivering affordable 5G broadband directly to standard smartphones.
This satellite-based service offers a competitive edge over existing providers like Starlink and OneWeb, which require extensive satellite constellations and specialized equipment. AST SpaceMobile’s technology relies on fewer but larger satellites, reducing network complexity while ensuring widespread access.
ISRO’s trusted LVM-3 rocket, nicknamed “Bahubali,” will carry out the mission. The rocket has already proven its reliability through previous successful launches for OneWeb, a company partially owned by Bharti Enterprises, which also operates Airtel.
The collaboration is a major milestone for ISRO, showcasing the global confidence in its space capabilities. It highlights India’s role in fostering cutting-edge advancements in telecommunications and space technology, further solidifying its reputation as a trusted partner for international satellite launches.
This commercial venture, managed by New Space India Limited (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm, is expected to set a new benchmark for satellite-based mobile communication and connectivity solutions worldwide.
