India is set to host the prestigious World Para Athletics Championship in November 2025 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has partnered with World Para Athletics, a division of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), to bring the global event to India. More than 100 countries are expected to participate, making it one of the largest events for para-athletes in India’s history.
The event is expected to cost between $4.8 million and $6 million and will include major upgrades to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. These improvements will feature the installation of a new synthetic track to meet the standards set by World Para Athletics. The Indian government has already been approached for a no-objection certificate (NOC), with the hosting fee having been paid to the international body.
A PCI official highlighted the event’s importance, stating, “This will be the biggest sporting event in India for para athletes, with over 1,000 competitors from around the world showcasing their talent.” Last year, India successfully hosted the Para Shooting World Cup in New Delhi, which added to the nation’s growing reputation in adaptive sports.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has awarded the contract for renovations at the stadium in preparation for the World Championships. India’s commitment to enhancing sports for people with disabilities is evident in the significant resources being dedicated to this event.
India has been performing exceptionally well in the Para World Championships. At the 2024 event in Kobe, Japan, India secured sixth place in the overall standings, with a total of 17 medals, including six gold, five silver, and six bronze—the nation’s best performance to date.
