Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s commitment of $1 million to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre during the opening ceremony of the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in New Delhi. This contribution will support capacity building, technical assistance, and the conservation of World Heritage Sites globally.
In his address, Modi emphasized that preserving global heritage is seen as a responsibility by India. He highlighted India’s cooperative efforts in conserving heritage sites in the Global South, such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Cham Temples in Vietnam, and the Stupa in Bagan, Myanmar.
The Prime Minister stressed that the $1 million grant will particularly benefit countries in the Global South. Additionally, he announced the launch of a certificate program in World Heritage Management for young professionals in India, reflecting his belief in the significant role of India’s cultural and creative industries in global growth.
Modi underscored India’s dedication to global welfare, noting the widespread acceptance of yoga and Ayurveda as part of India’s scientific heritage. He also referred to the G-20 Summit theme hosted by India—’One World, One Family, One Future’—and the country’s philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ which views the Earth as a mother and humanity as her children. He highlighted India’s initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and Mission LiFE as part of this vision.
The UNESCO event, taking place from July 21 to July 31, marks the first time India is hosting such a key global gathering. Modi was joined by UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, among other dignitaries.
