India has successfully conducted three test flights of the indigenously developed Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles at the Pokhran firing ranges in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out these tests as part of ongoing development trials. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, Indian Army, and private sector partners involved in the missile’s development. He emphasized that this advanced missile system, equipped with cutting-edge technologies, will significantly enhance the armed forces’ ability to counter aerial threats, such as enemy aircraft and drones.
The VSHORADS missile has been in development for several years to meet the critical needs of the Indian military for short-range air defense. Currently, the armed forces rely on Russian Igla missiles but have been seeking to modernize their arsenal for over a decade. This new system is expected to provide a technological boost in that direction. Two private companies are involved in the development and production of the missile system.
On a broader front, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, during the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue 2024, reiterated India’s commitment to peaceful dispute resolution and regional cooperation. He highlighted the importance of ASEAN in fostering stability and collective growth in the Indo-Pacific. Singh underscored India’s role in ensuring the safety of international maritime routes and its ongoing efforts to strengthen regional maritime security through joint exercises and information-sharing initiatives. He also stressed that India’s maritime cooperation aims to foster partnerships without conflicting with the interests of other nations. India’s approach to the Indo-Pacific region aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), prioritizing sustainable development, economic growth, and mutual security.
India’s proactive engagement in the region has solidified its reputation as a “credible and preferred security partner,” with the nation frequently acting as a first responder in regional security challenges.
