India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, recently met with Fiji’s Minister for Agriculture, Waterways, and Sugar Industry, Tomasi Tunabuna, to explore ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation in agriculture and capacity building. The discussions highlighted avenues for strengthening ties between the two nations, emphasizing knowledge exchange and skill development to support Fiji’s agricultural sector.
In a statement on X, the Indian High Commission in Suva confirmed that the meeting was “productive,” noting that both sides explored strategies to deepen the ongoing partnership and foster mutual growth. Earlier, on March 10, High Commissioner Mehta engaged with Fiji’s Minister for Information, Environment, and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya, to discuss cooperation across digital communications, multimedia initiatives, climate resilience, waste management, and training programs. The talks underscored the importance of sustainable development and knowledge sharing in tackling climate and environmental challenges.
Additionally, on March 6, Mehta met with the CEO of Fiji Development Bank, Filimone Waqabaca, to discuss potential collaborations in development finance, investment, and sustainable economic growth. These high-level engagements aim to strengthen financial and infrastructural support for projects that can boost Fiji’s economy while promoting India-Fiji collaboration.
In parallel, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, met Fiji’s Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, in New Delhi last month. Their discussions centered on enhancing bilateral ties, identifying shared priorities, and exploring cooperation in digital infrastructure. Margherita highlighted that these talks covered a wide spectrum of India-Fiji relations, emphasizing development partnerships, capacity building, and continued collaboration in technological initiatives.
India and Fiji share a robust relationship built on mutual respect, cultural connections, and strong people-to-people ties. This partnership was significantly strengthened following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Fiji in November 2014, coinciding with the inaugural Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC). Over the years, India has actively supported Fiji in nation-building across critical sectors, providing assistance in capacity building, sustainable development, and economic growth initiatives.
Through these sustained engagements, both nations continue to expand their collaboration, fostering resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity in the Pacific region.
