India has dispatched humanitarian assistance, including medical aid and disaster relief supplies, to Madagascar following the widespread devastation caused by two powerful tropical cyclones earlier this year.
The relief mission includes around 30 tonnes of essential supplies aimed at supporting communities severely affected by Tropical Cyclones Fytia and Gezani. The consignment was transported by an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft and delivered to the capital city of Antananarivo.
According to officials, the shipment includes 12 tonnes of critical medical supplies and 18 tonnes of disaster relief materials intended to assist immediate recovery efforts in cyclone-affected regions. The relief package consists of life-saving medicines, surgical equipment, tents, water storage containers, dignity kits and ready-to-eat meals designed to provide urgent support to displaced families and affected communities.
Madagascar suffered significant damage after Tropical Cyclone Fytia made landfall in late January, triggering severe flooding and destruction across multiple regions. The storm formed in the Mozambique Channel before intensifying and striking the island nation with powerful winds and heavy rainfall.
Just weeks later, the country was again hit by Tropical Cyclone Gezani, which caused additional destruction and casualties. The storm further damaged infrastructure and impacted several urban and rural areas, including the country’s second-largest city.
India’s humanitarian response reflects its commitment to supporting countries affected by natural disasters, particularly within the Indian Ocean region and across Africa. The assistance is part of India’s broader Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief efforts aimed at providing rapid support during emergencies.
Alongside its support for Madagascar, India has also extended assistance to Mozambique following devastating floods in several provinces. As part of the relief operation, India has sent hundreds of tonnes of food aid along with medicines and essential supplies to help affected communities.
Indian authorities stated that the country remains committed to extending humanitarian, medical and logistical support to nations facing disasters, reinforcing its role as a reliable partner and first responder in the Indian Ocean region and beyond.
