India has reached a significant milestone in its cybersecurity journey by attaining Tier 1 status in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). With an impressive score of 98.49 out of 100, India is now recognized as one of the ‘role-model’ nations in the field, showcasing its commitment to upholding global cybersecurity standards. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), acting as India’s nodal agency, was instrumental in achieving this status. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia celebrated this achievement as a proud moment for India, highlighting its reflection of a robust telecom sector and effective cybersecurity initiatives.
The GCI 2024 evaluated national efforts based on legal, technical, organizational, capacity development, and cooperation criteria, ensuring a thorough assessment of India’s cybersecurity framework.
India’s notable success in cybersecurity stems from numerous initiatives designed to bolster its cyber resilience. The Indian government has laid down strong foundations for cybercrime legislation and cybersecurity standards, enabling legal institutions to combat cyber threats effectively. Sectoral Computer Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) play a vital role in providing technical support and incident reporting, enhancing the country’s cyber capabilities.
Education and awareness are pivotal aspects of India’s cybersecurity strategy, with the integration of cybersecurity topics into school curricula and public campaigns promoting safe online practices. Moreover, international collaborations, skill development programs, and government incentives have fostered research, innovation, and capacity-building, further establishing India as a leader in the global cybersecurity landscape.
