India has been re-elected to the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the 2025-2026 term, extending its ongoing role in promoting global peace. The announcement was made by India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, emphasizing India’s commitment to contributing to international stability as a founding member and significant supporter of UN peacekeeping initiatives.
The Peacebuilding Commission, comprising 31 member states elected by the General Assembly, Security Council, and Economic and Social Council, plays a crucial role in advising and supporting post-conflict nations. It coordinates resources, fosters reconstruction efforts, and aims to build sustainable peace and development.
India, one of the largest contributors of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping operations, currently deploys around 6,000 troops and police officers in various missions worldwide, including in South Sudan, Lebanon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With nearly 180 Indian peacekeepers having sacrificed their lives in service—the highest among all contributing nations—India’s re-election underscores its deep-rooted dedication to global peacebuilding efforts.
