India has announced immediate financial aid of $500,000 to Vanuatu following the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck near its coast on December 17, 2024. This assistance was conveyed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as a gesture of solidarity and support for the nation’s recovery efforts.
The MEA expressed heartfelt condolences to Vanuatu’s government and citizens, reaffirming India’s readiness to offer comprehensive aid during this challenging time. India, as a key partner in the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC), is committed to supporting relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts in Vanuatu.
This effort aligns with India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), prioritizing Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. India’s commitment to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) reflects its steadfast role as a responsible responder in the region.
The earthquake occurred at 7:17 AM IST, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the National Centre of Seismology (NCS). Its epicenter was recorded at Latitude 17.68°S and Longitude 168.03°E.
Situated within the Pacific Ring of Fire, Vanuatu faces significant vulnerability to natural disasters. The United Nations’ World Risk Index has consistently ranked it as the most at-risk country globally since the index’s inception in 2011. Its susceptibility to climate change, seismic activities, and global shocks further underscores the urgent need for international support.
This aid highlights India’s dedication to fostering resilience and addressing the challenges faced by small island nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
