On Friday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Maldives Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon to discuss defense and security matters, as well as collaborative efforts for maritime security. Sharing highlights from the meeting on X, Jaishankar posted images and remarked on the productive discussions about India-Maldives defense cooperation, maritime initiatives, and mutual interests in regional peace and stability.
Jaishankar is in the Maldives for a three-day official visit from August 9 to 11, aimed at deepening the bilateral partnership and exploring new avenues for cooperation. His visit marks his first trip to the island nation following his reappointment for a second term.
In response to Jaishankar’s arrival, Maldivian Minister Moosa Zameer expressed enthusiasm for the visit, noting the importance of the discussions in strengthening the historic ties between India and the Maldives. Zameer highlighted his anticipation for meaningful talks to further solidify the relationship.
The visit comes on the heels of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s recent trip to India for the swearing-in ceremony of the new Indian Cabinet and Council of Ministers. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Jaishankar’s visit, following Muizzu’s visit, underscores the ongoing commitment to enhancing bilateral relations.
Jaishankar’s previous visit to the Maldives took place in January 2023.
