On the occasion of International Tiger Day 2025, India proudly announced its status as the world leader in tiger conservation, housing 3,682 tigers across 58 well-managed reserves. Union Minister for Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, shared this milestone on his official X account, attributing the success to a unified national vision and effective governance. He emphasized that protecting tigers goes beyond safeguarding an iconic species—it’s about nurturing the forests and ecosystems they represent.
The minister urged citizens to commit to the continued protection of these majestic creatures, which not only serve as ecological indicators but also provide economic and cultural benefits to local communities. “Let the roars grow louder,” he wrote, celebrating the country’s collective conservation spirit.
Accompanying his message was a video clip featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who underscored India’s unique relationship with tigers. PM Modi noted that in several regions of the country, tigers are revered and integrated into local beliefs—some tribal communities even regard the tiger as a brother figure.
The video outlined India’s conservation achievements under PM Modi’s leadership, pointing to a sharp increase in the tiger population—from 1,411 in the early 2000s to 3,682 in 2025. This growth, the video explained, is a result of robust policy implementation and active public involvement. It emphasized that India’s approach sets a global example by balancing environmental protection with economic and ecological interests.
This year’s International Tiger Day theme—“Securing the future of Tigers with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities at the heart”—reflects India’s commitment to inclusive conservation strategies. By aligning modern conservation efforts with indigenous knowledge and traditional respect for wildlife, India is not only saving its tigers but also preserving a broader ecosystem that supports biodiversity and community livelihoods.
As the world comes together to celebrate the tiger, India’s strides serve as a powerful testament to what can be achieved when leadership, community, and culture unite in pursuit of a shared environmental goal.
