India continues to hold its position as the world’s largest producer of coconuts, accounting for over 30% of global output, according to a recent parliamentary briefing. The coconut sector is a cornerstone of rural economies, supporting millions of farmers and their families across major producing states including Keralam, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Beyond farming, the industry underpins allied sectors such as coir, coconut oil, and other value-added products, which together form a significant component of India’s agro-based industrial ecosystem.
Despite its scale, the sector faces pressing challenges. Ageing plantations, declining productivity, and pest infestations have reduced output in some regions, impacting farmer earnings and long-term sustainability. Recognizing these constraints, the government has announced a comprehensive Coconut Promotion Scheme aimed at revitalizing the industry, boosting production, and enhancing value addition across the supply chain.
The initiative emphasizes replanting unproductive and ageing trees with high-yield, disease-resistant varieties, alongside encouraging intercropping practices to improve farm viability. Measures under the scheme also include strengthening processing infrastructure, expanding cultivation in suitable areas, and promoting exports of coconut-derived products. By adopting a holistic approach, the government seeks to ensure that both primary production and downstream industries benefit, ultimately raising farmers’ incomes and improving sector resilience.
Additionally, the policy aims to reinforce India’s leadership in the global coconut market by modernizing production practices and enhancing competitiveness. Export-oriented measures are expected to open new international markets for coconut-based products, providing long-term growth opportunities for producers and allied industries alike.
Through this comprehensive strategy, the Coconut Promotion Scheme seeks to balance economic sustainability with environmental considerations, creating a robust framework for India’s coconut sector. By supporting farmers, improving processing capabilities, and enhancing global trade potential, the initiative is poised to secure India’s status as the dominant player in the worldwide coconut industry while ensuring enduring prosperity for rural communities.
