India and Jordan held discussions on the possibility of using nuclear energy as a clean form of power during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the West Asian nation, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday. The talks reflected a shared understanding between the two countries on the role of nuclear energy in addressing climate change and ensuring long-term energy security.
Addressing a special briefing in Amman, Secretary (South) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Neena Malhotra, said the discussions were general in nature but underscored a common view that civil nuclear energy can be an important component of clean energy transitions. She noted that while no specific projects were finalised, both sides acknowledged the relevance of nuclear energy as a low-carbon option in the context of climate challenges.
Prime Minister Modi held extensive talks with King Abdullah II of Jordan at the Al Husseiniya Palace as part of his first full-fledged bilateral visit to the country. The visit marked 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan and focused on deepening cooperation across multiple sectors.
In a post on social media, Prime Minister Modi said he shared an eight-point vision to further strengthen bilateral ties. The areas outlined included trade and economic cooperation, fertilisers and agriculture, information technology, healthcare, infrastructure, critical and strategic minerals, civil nuclear cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
Describing his discussions with King Abdullah II as productive, the Prime Minister highlighted the Jordanian leader’s commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations. He said the milestone anniversary of diplomatic relations would continue to inspire both countries to move forward with renewed momentum.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi also proposed enhancing bilateral trade to USD 5 billion and called for collaboration between Jordan’s digital payment systems and India’s Unified Payments Interface. Several Memoranda of Understanding were finalised in areas including culture, renewable energy, water management, digital public infrastructure and a twinning arrangement between Petra and Ellora.
The Prime Minister said the outcomes of the visit marked a meaningful expansion of the India-Jordan partnership, particularly in clean energy, water resource management, digital innovation and cultural cooperation. Both leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments, reiterating the importance of restoring peace and stability in the region.
