India formally joined the US-led Pax Silica initiative, marking a significant expansion of its technological collaboration with the United States. The announcement came during the AI Impact Summit, where officials signed the Pax Silica Declaration alongside a bilateral addendum named the India-U.S. AI Opportunity Partnership. This framework establishes a shared commitment to securing the foundational elements of the artificial intelligence era.
Pax Silica, launched in December 2025, is a strategic alliance aimed at safeguarding global supply chains critical for AI development. The name combines “Pax,” symbolizing peace and stability, with “Silica,” referencing silicon, the key component in semiconductors. By joining the initiative, India positions itself as a crucial partner in building resilient and innovation-driven technology networks.
The signing ceremony featured senior representatives from both nations, including S. Krishnan, Secretary of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology; Sergio Gor, U.S. Ambassador to India; and Jacob Helberg, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment. Oversight was provided by Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, and Michael Kratsios, Director of the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy.
During the summit, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the potential for deepened cooperation in securing critical technology supply chains. Ambassador Gor emphasized India’s strategic value, citing its engineering capabilities, manufacturing expertise, and trusted position in global critical mineral processing. Both leaders underscored the initiative’s role in enhancing the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
A subsequent panel discussion featured the signatories and industry leaders, including Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra and Tata Electronics CEO Dr. Randhir Thakur. The dialogue focused on securing silicon and other critical minerals that support semiconductors and advanced computing systems.
The joint statement under the AI Opportunity Partnership outlined plans to promote innovation-friendly regulations, strengthen the physical AI stack, and support AI developers and startups. It also highlighted collaboration on research projects, private sector investment in next-generation data centers, and improved access to high-performance computing resources.
By participating in Pax Silica, India strengthens its position in a future-ready, trusted global supply chain for emerging technologies, signaling a new era of technology cooperation with the United States.
