As tensions escalate in West Asia with renewed missile exchanges between Israel and Iran, India has intensified diplomatic efforts to safeguard its interests, particularly focusing on the safe evacuation of Indian-flagged vessels and delivery of humanitarian aid to affected civilians. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that high-level talks with Tehran are ongoing, even as the Strait of Hormuz—a critical global oil and shipping corridor—remains a hotspot of concern.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “We are in active discussions with Iran and other countries. Numerous Indian ships remain in the Strait of Hormuz, and our primary objective is to ensure their safe return. Parallel talks are underway to facilitate humanitarian assistance, including medical and food aid, to populations impacted by the conflict.”
The urgency comes after reports of delays and safety concerns for over a dozen Indian vessels operating in the Persian Gulf. New Delhi is prioritizing secure maritime passage while exploring avenues to channel humanitarian relief to civilians caught in the crossfire.
India’s role as the current BRICS presidency adds a layer of complexity to its diplomatic balancing act. Jaiswal acknowledged the challenges of achieving consensus within the bloc, noting that several BRICS members are directly or indirectly involved in the conflict. “BRICS operates on consensus, and the differing positions of member states in this situation make bridging gaps difficult. Nevertheless, India continues to engage with all stakeholders actively,” he said.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar utilized the sidelines of the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting to brief European counterparts on the fast-developing crisis. Officials familiar with the discussions noted that India emphasized de-escalation, safeguarding maritime trade routes, and establishing humanitarian corridors. India’s neutral stance, maintaining communication with both Israel and Iran, positions it as a potential mediator even as other global powers navigate the escalating conflict.
With crude oil prices rising and potential supply-chain disruptions threatening energy security, the government is closely monitoring developments while prioritizing the safety and welfare of Indian nationals and commercial assets. Talks with Iran are expected to continue in the coming days, focusing on practical solutions for humanitarian aid delivery and safe passage for Indian merchant vessels.
