For the first time, India was showcased as the theme country at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center’s (APCC) 27th Annual New Year Celebration, held at Tacoma Dome in Washington State. The Consulate General of India in Seattle highlighted this milestone, marking the first time in APCC’s history that India was chosen as the central theme.
The event opened with a traditional Indian prayer invocation and was attended by around fifty elected officials from Washington State, including U.S. Congress Representatives Marilyn Strickland and Emily Randall, Washington State Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck, and State House Speaker Laurie Jinkins. The Consul General of India in Seattle honored each leader with a tri-color Indian stole. Additionally, video messages from Washington Governor Bob Ferguson, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal were shared during the inauguration.
A series of traditional Indian dance performances captivated the audience, featuring Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Bhangra, Garba, Odissi, and Silambam, a Tamil martial art dance.
The celebration also included a unique photo exhibition, India through Tim’s Eyes, featuring iconic Indian landmarks captured by Seattle-based photographer Tim Durkan during his recent visit to India.
Founded in 1996, APCC represents nearly 47 countries and cultures from Asia and the Pacific, fostering cross-cultural awareness through various programs. This year’s event strengthened cultural ties between India and Washington State, highlighting India’s vibrant heritage on an international stage.
