On Thursday, the Union Cabinet approved India’s proposal to join the International Energy Efficiency Hub, a significant step towards enhancing the country’s energy strategies. This decision grants India access to an exclusive network of 16 nations that share innovative energy practices and solutions, according to a statement from the Ministry of Power.
The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, endorsed the signing of a ‘Letter of Intent’ that facilitates India’s entry into this vital energy collaboration platform. The Energy Efficiency Hub is designed to promote global cooperation and advancements in energy efficiency.
As a member of the hub, India stands to gain valuable collaboration opportunities with other member nations, allowing it to share its expertise while also learning from global best practices. The initiative is expected to enhance India’s contribution to global climate change efforts by advocating for energy-efficient technologies and practices.
Established in 2020, the Energy Efficiency Hub succeeded the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC), which previously included India. The hub serves as a platform uniting governments, international organizations, and private sector stakeholders to exchange knowledge, effective practices, and innovative solutions in energy efficiency.
As of July 2024, the Hub comprises sixteen member countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
In India, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory agency, has been appointed as the implementing body for this initiative, representing India in its new role within the Hub.
