External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has defended the G20 events against criticism from the opposition. In an interview with ANI, he explained that past governments had chosen to limit the scope of these events. Meetings often confined themselves to areas like Lutyens’ Delhi or Vigyan Bhavan, with their influence hardly extending beyond a two-kilometer radius on good days. However, he emphasized that the current government’s approach is different, ushering in a new era and thought process.
Jaishankar noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed to involve the entire nation in the G20 process, fostering a sense of participation and ownership among the people. This vision transcends partisan lines, as many G20 events have been held in states not governed by the BJP.
The minister stressed the shift in mindset as the driving force behind these changes. This new perspective prioritizes democracy and inclusivity, seeking to break away from a scenario where a select few in one city control everything.
Jaishankar highlighted the exceptional importance of the G20 in a changing world. He pointed out that, compared to other international meetings like NATO, SCO, BRICS, QUAD, or UN gatherings, the G20 has garnered unique attention and focus due to its recognized significance.
