India is steadily positioning itself as a prominent global research hub with aspirations to lead the biotechnology sector, according to Ajay Sood, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. At the Global Bio-India 2024 Summit, Sood emphasised the nation’s swift progress in research and innovation, pointing to a remarkable improvement in India’s global standing. A recent report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) showcased India’s progress, noting that the country now ranks in the top five for 45 out of 64 technologies, an increase from 37 the previous year.
Sood also acknowledged India’s impressive growth in biological manufacturing, where the country now ranks second worldwide. He credited the newly implemented Bio-E3 biotechnology policy for its role in spurring economic growth, promoting environmental sustainability, and generating employment. The policy has recently incorporated a fourth “E,” addressing energy transition to tackle the pressing issue of global warming. Sood stressed the importance of collaboration between research institutions, universities, corporations, and the government to cultivate a sustainable and forward-thinking biotech ecosystem. He also highlighted the significance of integrating cutting-edge technologies such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence, which are essential in driving carbon-neutral solutions, including innovations like carbon sequestration and bioenergy crops.
