India has strongly condemned the incident of trespassing and vandalism at its Embassy in Zagreb, asserting that the matter has been taken up firmly with Croatian authorities and that those responsible must be held accountable for their illegal actions.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs underscored that diplomatic premises are inviolable under the Vienna Convention and must be protected by host governments. India has raised the issue with Croatian authorities both in New Delhi and in Zagreb, seeking swift action against the perpetrators involved in the incident.
The government described the act as reprehensible, noting that such actions reflect the motives and character of those behind them. Indian authorities emphasised that law enforcement agencies must treat such incidents with seriousness, in line with international diplomatic norms.
Reports circulating on social media suggested that anti-India elements were involved in the vandalism, with the incident occurring amid heightened diplomatic engagement between India and Europe. The development comes ahead of key engagements involving European leaders and India.
India and Croatia have, in recent years, strengthened their bilateral relationship, marked by high-level political engagement and expanding cooperation across sectors. During a visit to Zagreb, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed appreciation for Croatia’s support in India’s fight against terrorism and highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to democratic values, pluralism, and the rule of law.
Discussions between Indian and Croatian leadership have focused on deepening collaboration in areas such as digital technologies, renewable energy, defence, maritime infrastructure, tourism, and innovation. Both sides have also underlined the importance of reliable supply chains and enhanced trade ties.
India has reiterated that the safety and security of its diplomatic missions and personnel abroad are of paramount importance. New Delhi expects host countries to uphold their international obligations and ensure that diplomatic premises remain secure and respected at all times.
