India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval has said that relations between India and China are showing an “upward trend,” with the border situation remaining calm since the leaders of the two countries met in Kazan last year. His remarks came during the 24th round of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary issue with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
Wang Yi arrived in India on Monday for a two-day visit to discuss a wide range of matters, including the border situation, trade relations, and the possible resumption of direct flight services between the two nations.
Speaking at the meeting, Doval underlined the positive momentum in ties since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October last year. “There has been an upward trend. Borders have been quiet. There has been peace and tranquillity. Our bilateral engagements have become more meaningful. We owe this progress to the efforts of our leaders in Kazan, which set a new course, and we have benefitted greatly since then,” he said.
He emphasized that the environment created by the Kazan talks had enabled both countries to push ahead in different areas of cooperation. Doval expressed optimism that the current dialogue would be just as productive as last year’s and said it carries “special importance” ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to China for the SCO Summit next month.
This year also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and China. Calling it “a time to celebrate,” Doval highlighted the role of diplomats, ambassadors, and the armed forces of both countries in sustaining peace and stability along the border.
On Monday, ahead of the dialogue, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During their meeting, Jaishankar stressed the need to continue the de-escalation process, pointing out that peace and tranquillity at the border remain the foundation for further progress in India-China relations.
The positive tone of these discussions reflects a shared desire by both sides to stabilize relations, strengthen dialogue, and mark a new phase of cooperation, while maintaining vigilance along sensitive border areas.
