India and Canada are taking concrete steps toward revitalizing their economic relationship, as Indian Acting Consul General in Toronto Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh met with Canadian Minister of Economic Development Victor Fedeli to discuss enhanced trade prospects. The meeting comes in preparation for Fedeli’s upcoming trade mission to India, signaling a renewed phase of engagement between the two nations.
According to a post by the Consulate General of India in Toronto, the discussion highlighted a forward-looking approach to India–Canada relations, emphasizing growth opportunities across the India–Ontario economic corridor. The dialogue served as a strategic platform to align priorities before the minister’s visit, reflecting both nations’ intent to strengthen ties in trade, investment, and innovation.
Following the meeting, Minister Fedeli shared his optimism on X, stating, “It was great to meet Acting Consul General Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh ahead of our trade mission to India. We had an excellent discussion on the shared strengths of our two jurisdictions and the opportunities to deepen partnerships in energy, technology, healthcare, and life sciences.”
The meeting aligns with recent diplomatic efforts to rebuild momentum in India–Canada relations. Earlier this month, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand visited New Delhi and met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to “restore and reinvigorate” bilateral mechanisms. The two ministers agreed on an ambitious cooperation roadmap that aims to modernize and stabilize the partnership between the two countries.
A joint statement released after their meeting outlined a ‘New Roadmap’ for India–Canada relations, based on shared democratic values, mutual respect, and a commitment to upholding sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both sides recognized that in an era of economic uncertainty and geopolitical shifts, a strong India–Canada partnership can serve as a pillar of stability and resilience.
The statement further emphasized that a reinvigorated partnership will help diversify supply chains, enhance strategic cooperation, and create opportunities for businesses in both countries. Economic data also reflects growing engagement — bilateral trade reached $23.66 billion in 2024, supported by an expanding network of Indian and Canadian enterprises investing across sectors.
As Minister Fedeli prepares for his trade mission, the latest developments underscore a renewed diplomatic and commercial synergy — one that promises to open new avenues for growth in the energy, technology, and healthcare sectors, while reinforcing the long-standing friendship between India and Canada.
