External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin in New Delhi on Friday to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, and connectivity. In a post on X, Jaishankar highlighted discussions on expanding partnerships in investment, health, and technology, emphasizing the growing potential between the two nations.
Following the meeting, Brazil’s Vice President’s office noted that both leaders were optimistic about deepening trade and economic ties. Key topics included strengthening energy collaboration, advancing partnerships in pharmaceuticals and defence, boosting research investments, improving connectivity, and fostering cooperation in emerging sectors such as Artificial Intelligence and digitalisation.
Alckmin, who arrived in India earlier this week, has been holding a series of high-level discussions to further collaboration in trade, industry, energy, and strategic sectors. On Wednesday, he met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, with both leaders underscoring the strategic significance of defence and security, a core pillar of India-Brazil relations.
The visit builds on the sixth India-Brazil Strategic Dialogue held on October 3 in New Delhi, led by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Brazil’s Ambassador Celso Luis Nunes Amorim. That dialogue focused on cooperation in defence, energy, critical minerals, health, pharmaceuticals, and multilateral platforms including BRICS, IBSA, and the upcoming COP-30 climate summit in Brazil.
Economic engagement remains a priority. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Brazil in July, both countries agreed to increase bilateral trade to USD 20 billion within five years. Alckmin’s visit is expected to strengthen India-Brazil ties further and set the stage for President Lula da Silva’s state visit to India next year, following the roadmap outlined during the Modi-Lula summit.
