Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, said the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement between India and Australia is already delivering huge results, reinforcing the strength of bilateral business and strategic ties.
Highlighting the shared vision of both countries, Green said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remain firmly aligned on ensuring a stable, free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. He underlined that this shared outlook is a key driver of the rapidly expanding partnership between New Delhi and Canberra.
Green praised the Indian community in Australia for playing a vital role in strengthening people-to-people connections and economic engagement. He described the Indian diaspora as a “human bridge” that contributes significantly to Australia’s society while also deepening bilateral business links.
Emphasising economic complementarity, the Australian envoy noted that India and Australia rarely compete, as both nations produce different goods and services. This complementarity, he said, has helped accelerate trade and investment under the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement.
Reflecting on recent geopolitical disruptions, Green stressed that trust, reliability and friendship are critical foundations of modern partnerships. He said India and Australia benefit from a relationship built on confidence, which has enabled both countries to conclude ambitious trade agreements and pursue long-term cooperation.
India and Australia upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020, anchored in shared democratic values, economic engagement and increasing high-level interactions. Bilateral relations continue to deepen across trade, security and regional cooperation, with a strong focus on maintaining stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
The Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, which came into force in late 2022, has emerged as a central pillar of this partnership, opening new opportunities for businesses and reinforcing the long-term strategic alignment between the two nations.
