India and the United States are in talks about co-producing American Javelin missiles in India to meet the Indian military’s needs. These discussions were held during a recent high-level visit by US officials to India, defense sources revealed to ANI.
The dialogue aims to enhance cooperation between the two nations, particularly in joint military equipment production. The Indian Army’s demand for advanced anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) is substantial, prompting the recent acquisition of a limited number of Israeli Spike ATGMs under emergency conditions.
For years, the Indian military has sought third-generation ATGMs, but global procurement efforts have not succeeded. As an alternative, the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on indigenous solutions and will soon conduct trials for its Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MP-ATGM) to meet Army requirements.
The Indian MPATGM system, comprising the missile, launcher, target acquisition system, and fire control unit, has undergone multiple field evaluations to validate its technological edge. The Indian forces are interested in shoulder-fired systems that are lightweight and suitable for difficult terrains, reducing the need for extensive manpower.
Identification of an Indian partner for the joint missile production is pending, as discussions are still at an early stage. Previously, the US showcased the Javelin missile capabilities to India, but the project did not advance.
Developed and produced by American defense giants Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, Javelin missiles have been sold to numerous countries and have seen action in various conflicts.
