India is leading the global conversation by emphasizing the government’s commitment to democratize artificial intelligence (AI) and make it accessible to everyone. At the recent ‘Global IndiaAI Mission’ summit in the capital, countries from the Global South acknowledged India’s role in giving them a voice in the global AI forum and bridging the gap with the Global North.
Over 2,000 global AI experts, policymakers, AI practitioners, industry/startups, and academics attended the summit, with more than 10,000 AI enthusiasts participating virtually.
The IT Ministry highlighted that sessions on the key pillars of the IndiaAI Mission showcased India’s planned actions and dedication to building an inclusive and robust AI ecosystem, aiming to lead global AI innovation.
The summit included the Collaborative AI on Global Partnership (CAIGP), which brought together members of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), AI experts, and industry representatives to identify ways to overcome the global AI divide.
The participants agreed on the future vision of GPAI. The IT Ministry stated that the summit led to thorough discussions and provided deep insights into various aspects of implementing the IndiaAI Mission.
The IndiaAI Mission has been approved with a budget of $1.26 billion, with $243 million allocated to support the Indian startup ecosystem in developing indigenous AI-based solutions. This support will address issues such as compute, datasets, and skills, providing access to GPU infrastructure at subsidized rates.
The insights from the summit revealed that India has a competitive advantage in AI due to its skills, market, and demand. For entrepreneurs, the value creation and return on investment beyond costs will be the key drivers. The IT Ministry noted that the IndiaAI Mission can reduce the cost of innovation and promote indigenous development.
